The Australian government, through its agents Animal Health Australia, has now published a set of animal welfare standards for sheep and cattle, to be "endorsed" by state and territory governments.
These are a disgrace. If brought into law, they will allow sheep and cattle to be dropped, kicked and punched, and subjected to surgical mutilations without pain relief.
Farmers I know are appalled at how bad these proposed standards are.
As the recent winner of the Booker Man prize (Richard Flanagan) said: "I'm ashamed to be an Australian."
